Bishop Allen - The Broken String
July 14, 2007 |
Somehow I came across the Charm School album from Bishop Allen a few years ago. I think it was from a website recommendation or some developer that lived with them and what I found was one of the most catchy, cleanest and certainly most “popie” indie albums of the 00’s. It became a mainstay in my player for months and I passed it along to many friends who became many new fans. I even recommended that The Mates of State should tour with them (my brother was their sound guy). Well as is often the case with stellar bands Bishop Allen became a phenomenon and gathered up tons of fans. They released a couple of singles but none had the staying power of Charm School. Well yesterday they released their follow up album The Broken Strings and by god I must declare that YES ITS GREAT!!!!
Ok I have only been listening to it for a little over 24 hours but there are a couple of songs that have that Bishop Allen charm, that playful hook and simplistic joy they are so good at producing. I am really liking the opening track The Monitor and the track Click Click Click Click. It is a more mature album and is a great follow up - something that most bands seem to miss - The Broken String shows that their skills and talents are not one off’s but actually stem from ability. So if you are a fan of gentle indie pop give Bishop Allen’s new album The Broken String a listen. It is available directly from their site and is well worth the $12 price tag. Plus if you buy it direct you get both the digital downloads and also the hard copy of the CD mailed to you - Great option by the way.
