Norah Jones at the Santa Barbara Bowl
June 26, 2007 |
Norah Jones opened the 2007 Santa Barbara Bowl season Friday night to a sold out audience. It was a subdued crowd for a subdued act on a gorgeous star filled night. Norah is an amazing singer. Something about her silky smooth phrasing makes it very easy to like her. Her big brown eyes and warm and inviting persona seem to call out to the audience but its her muscianship that holds them.
Call her what you will it is hard to argue that she is a great artist. I happen to be a fan of her neo-classical nuevo country infused style so it makes it much easier for me to write a good review but what I am not a fan of is boredom. And Norah was boring. Now I know its the type of music that soothes the aging but that is no excuse for not putting on your best and rockin’ the house. Her Handsome Band are more than capable of pulling out the stops at any given moment. Adam Levy on guitar is one of the most capable players around (except for that damn tongue thing he does). The rhythm section were as professional as possible always on time and seldom heard. But that is just it. Norah and her cohorts are more than able musicians, in fact they are among the best youngsters out there so why dont they pull out the stops and get the show going? I have to say that while I really enjoyed the show, really loved the acoustics and the sound of the Bowl I was bored by the lack of umphh. Perhaps that was the intention of Norah and her Handsome Band but it was lost on this fan.
