American Hardcore - The birth of hardcore punk
May 13, 2007 |
I watched the American Hardcore documentary the other night. It took me back to my young rebel skate punk days. Those days when I was so pissed off that this music sounded good. Not that it doesn’t still it just really is more about the attitude than the tune. The movie is a fantastic look at the birth of the Hardcore punk scene that exploded in the early 80’s. The days of Ronnie the cold war and Skinny ties. Those were my early adolescent days and I remember them well. Whether it was the West Coast sounds of Circle Jerks, GBH or the East Coast sounds of MDC and Bad Brains or the genre definitive Black Flag those 15 to 60 second explosions of anger were as punk as punk was ever. The pure adolescent energy that can only come from anger the in your face physical nature of this era will never be revisited. It makes todays Bubble Gum Corporate puke look a lot like the New Age Skinny ties or arena rock that caused the back lash to begin with. If you were at all a fan of punk or of American culture this is a great look at the beginnings of a revolution.
